Introducing Scrollbar Markers: Navigate Highlighted Content with Ease
Written on:

Searching through lengthy web pages can be challenging, especially when you need to locate specific information quickly. That's why we're excited to introduce our new Scrollbar Markers feature in Highlighty 2.3.4, designed to transform how you navigate through highlighted content on any webpage.
What Are Scrollbar Markers?
Scrollbar Markers are visual indicators that appear on your browser's scrollbar, showing you exactly where highlighted text appears on a page. Each marker corresponds to a highlight in your document, making it incredibly easy to see the distribution of your search results at a glance.
How It Works

When you search for terms using Highlighty, small colored markers will appear along your scrollbar, representing the position of each highlight on the page. The colors of these markers match your highlight colors, creating a seamless visual connection between your search terms and their locations.
But we didn't stop there. These markers are fully interactive:
- Click to Navigate: Simply click on any marker to instantly scroll to that specific highlight. No more endless scrolling to find what you're looking for!
- Visual Feedback: When you click a marker, the corresponding highlight will animate with a subtle pulsing effect, making it immediately obvious which content you've navigated to.
- Hover Effects: As you hover over markers, they expand slightly to make selection easier, especially when highlights are densely clustered.
Perfect for Research and Reading
This feature is particularly valuable for:
- Students reviewing research websites
- Professionals analyzing lengthy reports or documentation (HTML)
- Researchers comparing occurrences of specific terms across documents
- Anyone who needs to quickly navigate between important points in a long article
Accessibility Benefits
The Scrollbar Markers feature was designed with accessibility in mind. For users with visual impairments or those who find it difficult to scan through large amounts of text, these markers provide a structural map of content that can be navigated with minimal effort.
When combined with our new text decoration options (underline, overline, etc.), Highlighty becomes an even more powerful tool for users with different visual needs.
How to Enable Scrollbar Markers
This feature is enabled by default in Highlighty 2.3.4. To toggle it on or off:
- Open the Highlighty extension
- Navigate to the Basic Settings menu
- Find the "Scrollbar markers" option
- Toggle it on or off according to your preference

Technical Implementation
Behind the scenes, Scrollbar Markers use advanced DOM manipulation techniques to create a responsive, non-intrusive overlay that works across different browsers and webpage structures. The markers dynamically update as you scroll or resize your browser window, ensuring they always accurately represent the position of highlights on your page.
User Feedback
During our beta testing phase, users consistently highlighted (pun intended!) the Scrollbar Markers feature as a game-changer:
"I work with legal documents that can be hundreds of pages long. Being able to see exactly where my search terms appear and jump directly to them has saved me hours of work." - Legal Researcher
"As someone with ADHD, this feature helps me stay focused by making it easy to navigate between important points without getting lost in the text." - Graduate Student
